Pragmatic Tolerance & Urban Culture in Amsterdam: Interdisciplinary research with the use of e-research practices. Like many urban centers in Europe, Amsterdam is under pressure as it negotiates shifts in the ethnic make-up of the city. There are 174 ethnic groups in the city of Amsterdam ranging from third generation Indonesian immigrants to first and second generation Turkish and Surinamese immigrants—these Amsterdammers are creating new neighborhoods and new economies. Such changes provide fertile grounds for examination of a changing society. In this course, then, we explored the history and current manifestations of pragmatic tolerance and, in addition, the cultural changes that are impacting individual identities and nation identity.
